The Harbor Psychotherapy Services, LCSW, PLLC
Melissa Ramdas, LMHC
In 2008, I worked as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in a substance abuse treatment program for clients with dual disorders of different ages. I helped to create
guidelines for cultural sensitivity with the agency's multicultural committee, improving professionals' cultural awareness of the 21st century client. My work at this agency
informed my background in mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, personality disorders, and various forms
of addictions. As a result of this position, I was able to take my developing knowledge of different disorders and addictions and apply them in numerous academic settings
such as Mercy College, Pace University, and Iona College. I approach my students and clients similarly in my desire to provide education about mental health awareness. I
am passionate about helping clients feel more empowered through knowledge and I enjoy helping people find their unique path in life.
I have a particular interest in human sexuality and gender roles, recognizing the role each have on peoples' self-perceptions regardless of age, race, or color. My topic of
dissertation focuses on helping mental health professionals develop competencies for working with LGBT members during their graduate studies. I also have expert knowledge
of crisis intervention skills that can be applied during events such as loss of employment or acts of terrorism. My publication, Emergency Response Plan for the City of Yonkers (2009),
outlined exit strategies for major cities during a natural disaster. I believe that through education, support, and compassion, professionals such as myself can help clients
achieve their greatest potential.
I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychobiology from Quinnipiac University in 2006, and a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Mercy College in 2008. Currently, I
am a PhD candidate in the Mental Health Counseling program at Pace University with an expected graduation date for June of 2019.
